PHILOSOPHY
I have always been guided by a psychodynamic approach, which simply means that in order for us to fully address the issues that bring you to therapy, we need to understand both current and past contributors to these issues. Individuals come to therapy because of real and painful problems they are having in the here and now. They struggle with depression or anxiety, with a relationship that is in crisis, or with feelings of insecurity or loneliness. Sometimes, what is therapeutic involves identifying and actualizing important changes for yourself and your relationships. Other times, understanding and working through critical past experiences, which are often connected to present struggles, will bring enormous relief in and of itself.
Regardless of our focus, I truly believe that emotional pain is a manifestation of our need to live more authentically and intimately. I have seen countless individuals and couples heed the lessons of difficult times, and go on to use what they’ve learned to live fuller and more gratifying lives. Together, we will understand how both the past and the present have brought you to this point, and we will identify and support the changes you are needing.
I believe that therapy can lead to profound changes for both individuals and couples, but only if the therapeutic relationship is one of genuine caring and deep understanding. In addition to whatever expertise I can provide, I hope to form a relationship with you that you will come to trust and value.
